GIRLS GOLF

The season looks bright for the girls of the Enumclaw High golf team.

Three Hornets return who were second team all-league selection last year. The trio includes seniors Kennedy VanHoof and Taylor Anglin, along with junior Emma Murphy. All three advances to the Class 4A state tournament.

They’re not the only ones with varsity experience, however. This year’s team also includes juniors Danyel Korpe, Maya Rismiller and Maddy Rubin; all played in last season’s NPSL tournament, helping the Hornets to a third-place finish.

Coach Steve Murphy had a first look at his team in action during the Aug. 30 Lake Tapps Jamboree. The first real test comes tomorrow, Thursday, when the Hornet girls return to Tapps Island Golf Course to take on Auburn Riverside.

BOYS GOLF

When the Enumclaw High boys tee it up for the first time this season, there will be handful of familiar names on the scorecard.

Returning from last year’s squad are junior Ty Albrecht, a first team all-NPSL selection, junior Jaeger Christian and sophomore Cameron Serba.
Christian advances last year to play in the Class 4A state tournament.
The team’s losses were significant, including last year’s league Most Outstanding Golfer, Matt Hodgman. Also departing due to graduation were Mark Porter and Bobby Sparkman, both second team all-league selections, and Riley Hebrank, who earned league honorable mention.

The Hornets kick things off with a match tomorrow, Thursday, against Auburn Riverside. EHS opens at home, starting at 3 p.m. at Enumclaw Golf Course.

BOY’S TENNIS

A pair of Hornet seniors – Kyle Dunning and Easton Tandecki – are back in the fold for EHS coach Will Stuenkel.

Both earned all-North Puget Sound League honors a season ago. Adding to the list of players with varsity expeience are senior Payton Willis and junior Sam Laurnen.

The Hornets opened the season yesterday, hosting White River, and continue tomorrow, Thursday, by taking on Todd Beamer. The match begins at 3:30 p.m. on the EHS courts.

BOYS WATER POLO

There’s a new voice leading the Hornet program. Scott Usborn was hired during the summer to head the boys water polo squad, taking the reins from Bob Averill, who headed the team for nine seasons.

Usborn is a California native, but not entirely new to the region. Last year he assisted with the girls water polo program at Auburn High and was head coach for boys swimming.

He inherits a squad long on experience. Seniors include Tim Arensdorf, Ethan Decker, Ben Hauswirth, Miles Kratzer, Christopher Morgan, Brandon Stark and Cody Williams. Also back is junior Ethan Blanco; sophomores include Michael Arensdorf, Jacob Hauswirth and Kellen Murray.

The coach and his crew will make their 2018 debut Friday, Sept. 7, hosting Emerald Ridge. The match begins at 7 p.m. at the Enumclaw Aquatic Center.

CROSS COUNTRY

Enumclaw High’s coaches, Jeff Jacobsen on the boys side and Tod Witzel for the girls, will see their troops in action for the first time this Saturday.

The Hornets will treak across the mountains to compete in the Ellensburg Invitational. The regular season gets under way Sept. 12 with a three-team meet at Issac Evans Park in Auburn; joining the Hornets will be host Auburn Mountainview High School and Thomas Jefferson.

The boys look to be led by senior Sam Lingwall, who was a first team all-NPSL runner a year ago. For the girls, the top returner is senior Payton Roberson, also a first team selection last season. Each advanced to last year’s Class 4A state championships.

Other runners with state meet experience include Foster Barnhart, Dominic Deady and Kyle Revell on the boys roster. Among the girls, Piper Layman and Natasha Puzon competed at last year’s district meet.

GIRLS SOCCER

The Hornets return some key components from a 2017 team that won the North Puget Sound League 4A and came within a single victory of advancing to the state tournament.

Among those being welcomed back by coach Shaun Tobius are seniors Logan Breidenbach, Becca Lindberg and Marissa MadFarland; juniors Monica Brown, Carli Boger and Sawyer Anderson; and sophomore Olivia Quinnett.
