HORNET BOY'S WRESTLING SUCCESS AT STATE 2016

Hornet Boy's Wrestling success at State 2016

| 2/27/2016

With two state champions, a runner-up and a third-place finisher, the Enumclaw

High wrestling team gave the Class 3A state title a run February 12 and 13 at the

Tacoma Dome. The Hornets know how hard it is to earn a crown. They won the

2015 and 2012 state titles with one champion. The 2016 championship went to

Arlington, which posted one champion.

The Hornets, who also won titles in 2011, 2009 and 2008, finished tied for fifth with

Kamiakin. Arlington was followed by Mount Spokane, SPSL 3A rival Bonney Lake,

and Edmonds-Woodway.

Kyle Opland was the first of the Hornets’ champs for the night. He defeated Sidat

Kanyi of Edmonds-Woodway with a 9-4 decision for the 120-pound title. The EHS

senior, who finished fourth, third and third since his freshman year, opened with

back-to-back pins over Nick Holbrook of O’Dea (1 minute, 50 seconds) and Will

Rush of Arlington, 3:41. He topped Mikael Failor of Southridge 12-4 in the

semifinals.

For Hornet Jake Treece, who was runner-up last season to teammate Hunter Haney,

a 9-0 victory over Gavin Rork of Arlington in the championship capped a swift and

methodical trek through the 132-pound bracket. The EHS junior smothered Gavin

Gies of North Central 13-0 in the opener and blanked Max Kiser of Glacier Peak 6-0

in the quarterfinals. Treece earned his spot in the finals with a 1:36 pin over Edward

Smith of Rogers Spokane. Treece finished 7th as a freshman in 2014.

The Hornets also placed Kione Gill in the finals. The 182-pounder lost an 8-4 duel

for the crown to Ben Broselle of Ferndale.  The Enumclaw sophomore tore through

the bracket pinning Kaden Mast of Kelso (1:48), Liam Ball of Meadowdale (5:17) and

Spencer Schultz of Edmonds Woodway (2:28).

Enumclaw’s Quinton Southcott earned a third-place finish at 138 pounds with a 6-4

decision over Marcus Phillips of Rogers Spokane.
